understanding public speaking isn't
really that hard there are only three
kinds of speeches you need to learn to
write organize and deliver there are
informative speeches persuasive speeches
and special occasion speeches if you
learn the basics of these three you will
have a solid foundation as a public
speaker informative speeches will be the
topic of this video I want to talk to
you about the goal of an informative
speech and how to put an informative
speech together and in doing so provide
important strategies to be successful a
great idea with any project is to begin
with the end in mind so what is your
goal with an informative speech first
you are there to tell your listeners
something new that they don't already
know why would you tell them what they
already do know but the word telling
really doesn't capture the real intent
of informing you are there to help the
audience understand you need to put
yourself in their shoes and ask what
words illustrations are examples or
references might enable them to get it
second your goal with an informative
speech is to keep the focus of your
listeners this doesn't mean to tell
jokes so your audience doesn't fall
asleep be professional poised very clear
and well-organized in your thoughts
think about the last time you lost focus
while listening to a speaker I would bet
it was because the speaker started
rambling and was not well organized
choose your words and organization with
clarity in mind
third your goal with an informative
speech is to be remembered in 1963 dr.
Martin Luther King jr. gave a speech in
Washington DC what was the most
remembered line it was I have a dream
your goal might not be to move a nation
but why are you speaking unless you want
your listeners to remember what you've
said now that we've talked about what
our end goals are let's talk about how
to put an informative speech together
let me give you five brief steps I
always begin by considering the audience
you are to be an audience centered
public speaker so as you start the
process of putting together your speech
remember that every other step has to be
infused with this abiding principle
second step is to develop the speech as
mentioned in the developing your speech
video begin with a blank piece of paper
and write your topic and your general
purpose at the top then write your
specific purpose that is what is it that
you want to accomplish next work on
summarizing your speech into one
declarative sentence this is your
central idea and finally write out your
blueprint sentence called your preview
sentence that will tell your audience
the steps or points you will elaborate
on in your presentation this
step-by-step process is really the
beginning of writing your draft outline
you will take this and then fill in the
blanks for the rest of your outline
third step is to choose which
organizational structure to use to
present your speech there are five which
are fully explained in the organizing
your speech video topical chronologic
spacial causal and problem solution for
the informative speech you should focus
on using the topical chronological or
spatial organizational structure fourth
step is to outline your speech begin by
using the preview sentence or pre our
blueprint sentence to create your main
points in fact your central idea should
be a sentence summary of the speech the
preview tells exactly the points you
will talk about and then you just put
these into sing single clear declarative
sentences and then you have each of your
main points create your sub points to
develop and explain your main points if
you're giving people new information
it's usually because you have researched
it if you are sharing researched
information you must always give an oral
citation for each bit of information
that tells your audience the author the
article it was found in the source of
the article and the date you also might
want to tell why this author is a good
source the final aspect of outlining is
creating the four part introduction
attention topic why I can speak about
this and preview and then add your
transitions between the introduction and
the body of the speech and in between
each main point and finally your
two-part conclusion the review and
wrap-up let me wrap this up by reminding
you to begin preparing your informative
speech with the three goals of telling
new things keeping listeners focus and
saying things in a way that they will be
remembered additionally I hope what you
have learned about putting an
informative speech together is that it's
very similar to how you would put any
speech together there is truth to the
cliche tell them what you're going to
tell them
tell them and then tell them what you
just told them see you in the next video
