For Parents & Godparents Preparing For a Baptism: Responsibilities

the candidate for Holy Baptism will now

be presented I present this child to

receive the sacrament of baptism will

you be responsible for seeing that child

you present it's brought up in the

Christian faith in life I will with

God's help will you by your prayers and

witness help this child to grow into the

full stature of Christ I will with God's

help what you're saying in public as a

godparent and parent before Almighty God

and the rest of us is that this is not a

rite of social passage this is not

something to get the kid done this is

not to protect the child superstitiously

get some bad malady that will befall

them and God forbid something should

happen to them that they'll be received

into the pearly gates well that's sort

of lovely and charming possibly but it

is not what we're doing when we baptize

people into the life death and

resurrection and the full meaning of

Jesus Christ not to get too serious

about it but it is a revolutionary

rebellious act that you are about to

participate in you are essentially

conspirators with us conspirator the

word conspirators comes from the word

spirit and con with we are breathing

with God we are conspiring with God to

do something radical and revolutionary

and make no mistake about it that is

what baptism is and you are promising to

bring this child up into that conspiracy

that by your life your example the kind

of person you are how you live your life

how you pray how you work whom you work

for what you do and sacrifice for others

all that will be visible to this child

as they grow so that they will see who

they are intended to become look they

can come to church hour or two a week as

they grow up in Sunday school when

they're you know teenager they might get

confirmed to go through a confirmation

class oh that's true which means they'll

be coming

Church what an hour-and-a-half a week

two hours a week 30 40 weeks a year

maybe and how often do they see you as

parenting godparent they see you a lot

more than they see me so if they grow up

without faith and they grow up wondering

you don't blame the church for that that

is your responsibility by your prayers

and your witness to help this child to

grow up in the full stature of Christ

Jesus is caught as much as taught and I

could preach a good sermon and we can

have a great Sunday school but what you

do in the home that's it so the weights

on you now we're going to support you

because we to make a promise before

Almighty God that we will support this

child in their life in Christ so our

community is part of this worship

services is going to stand with you and

we're gonna make a promise before

Almighty God and each other that we're

going to be the kind of community of

faith where this child can remain in the

baptismal waters and feels surrounded

and loved by our prayers and our witness

so that's your role as a godparent

prayers and witness and what we're doing

a baptism is truly radical and

revolutionary now let's get to that
