Expressing Condolences in English - Advance English lesson

hi my name is Neha Rita and welcome to a

new lesson today we are going to learn

how to express or how to offer

condolences now what does the word

condolence mean well it means where you

are showing sympathy you empathize with

the bereaved and you acknowledge

someone's dead now what does the word

bereaved mean well-briefed is the person

who is grieving over the loss of the

death of a loved one okay so that person

is called us bereaved right so at times

it gets difficult to offer condolences

especially in English because deep

emotions are involved you want to show

you support you want to show your care

and concern to that bereaved person but

you really don't want to say something

that would sadden or disturbed that

disturb that person right so that's why

I here in this lesson we are going to

learn some expressions that would help

you to offer your condolences okay so

let's have a look here the first one is

I'm sorry for your loss

now I'm sorry for your loss is

definitely very commonly used by people

and it is a very sweet and simple

heartfelt expression to show or to offer

your condolences so you can always stick

to this expression when you have to

offer condolences be it your friend be

it your relative or be a person who was

not very close to you okay you can

always use this expression it's just a

perfect one but we also have some other

options for you here we have words can

express my sorrow for your loss or you

can also say that I can't explain how

sad I am so here basically you're

falling short of words you know you are

admitting that you are tongue-tied and

don't you think it's always better to

admit that

rather than falling back on a platitude

so you can always use this expression if

you think you have nothing else to say

so words can express my sorrow for your

loss or I don't know how to express the

sadness for your loss okay another one

that we have is she or he will be sadly

missed you can always keep it simple

that she or he will be sadly missed and

you can also add maybe some detail or a

small story about the person who died

and always make sure that you use the

past tense verb to describe that person

who is dead okay because usually people

end up using especially English learners

end up using the present tense and that

is not right because that person is gone

he's dead he's no more right so whenever

you have to describe or you want to show

that show a quality of the person who

died okay use the past tense verb okay

and the last one over here that we have

for you is I am here for you if you need

anything now this shows that you do care

about that person okay about the

bereaved person right so here you're

saying that I'm here for you if you need

anything you can also specify that how

you can help maybe you can help with the

kids or maybe you can offer a

home-cooked meal

or maybe even you can catch up for a

coffee you know if the person feels a

little up you can definitely take him or

her out for a coffee right so this is

the way you would express your concern

by saying that I'm here for you if you

need anything okay you can use these

expressions to offer your condolences

and now let's have a look at offering

condolences in writing what if you want

to email or what if you want to write it

on someone's social networking blog okay

so let's have a look now it is not

always necessary that you would get

chance to pay a wizard to the family of

the dead right because if you're not

living in the same city or if you're not

living in the same country it gets

difficult for you to visit the family so

many people do opt for writing so either

they send letters or they send

condolences cards that you that are

always available at stationery stores or

they also opt for emails okay so if you

are writing on expressing your

condolences then what you can use is

please accept our sincere condolences

okay so this is on the behalf of your

whole family you are writing and you're

offering your condolences in an email or

in a letter okay our people also use the

social networking sites like the

Facebook okay so make sure that you

always take out a little time and send a

message okay rather than just putting it

in a blog if you can always send a

personal message and you can use these

expressions saying please accept our

sincere condolences or I would like to

express my sincere condolences on the

debt off the person's name who died okay

okay so this is the way you would write

okay and here are the closing

expressions now of course when you go me

to say that I'm sorry for your loss and

now when you're leaving okay you've paid

you've paid a wizard and now when you're

leaving you can always use these

expressions you can say your family will

be in my thoughts and prayers okay so

here you're showing your concern that

okay we are not just going to forget

about it but we are going to pray for

your family okay and the other one that

I have for you is wishing you peace as

you grieve this loss okay so these are

the perfect expressions for closing your

condolence

okay you can also use it in your emails

okay when you're writing you can also

use these expressions and you can also

say it when you're visiting someone okay

now many people also use the expression

time will heal okay this is not the

right expression to use of course it is

a fact that time would heal but not the

right time to say it okay it is kind of

a little rude because if the death is so

fresh then definitely I would not

suggest to use the expression time will

heal everything okay so how these

expressions are helpful for you to offer

or to express condolences okay so next

time if someone got forbidden if someone

dies you know what you would have to say

okay I will be back with a new lesson

soon till then you take care

you
